When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Love Girls

Love and hope. I say the words and I still wonder what it means.

I think of all the images, the poems, the quotes, the songs, the stories. The symbols.

I think of my own work, the Fiction Corpus, which I tested and analyzed because I too wanted to know what it was about. Sure enough, the words love and hope were two of the most frequent words I had used.

Clearly love and hope are a potent fuel. They've driven many a work of art. The've helped create many beautiful things. Maybe that's it.

Use of Love in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Oh God! Your mother was so beautiful. She was a diamond ring! A blessed creature! She died! God! She died! Zeus: creature of dust! You took her! You chopped off her head! Placed her in death and destruction! I loved your mother. She was a good woman. She trusted me. In the end, she trusted me. I loved her.

Verse 3 from the chapter called Invocation

The MTA stationed itself around Olympus Mons and around every major point on the irrigation system, which, after decades upon decades of eager development, became vast and unknowable to men, penetrating far-flung regions with massive amounts of pressure, complicated systems and safeguards, gauges, unseen aqueducts forming strange and multifarious designs - mostly thanks to geography, of course, but also thanks to economics and evolving technology, which insisted on placing new pipes next to old ones, better pumps next to broken ones, and whole new branches of irrigation in previously undeveloped areas wherever greenhouses popped up, according to the most recent wind patterns, leaving old branches completely abandoned wherever dust had made growing unfavorable - but whose first and greatest branch went straight down (in order to beat the Southern Ice Cap Company into submission) to the southern hemisphere, to the Hellas basin, where, being the lowest point on Mars, the first permanent settlements were made (in the dubious hope that the elevation and increased pressure would somehow prove useful to Martian civilization) which, in turn, came to coalesce and grow into the modern urban giant called Centropolis.

Verse 9 from the chapter called Childhood

Americans were not almighty; they were not invincible. They were not powerless: they were powerful. They were a fortress: a living fortress. Fortress America! The only people who knew what was going on were the people inside the fortress; everybody outside the fortress was waiting to find out: there was no way to spy from the outside. You had to be in the fortress, and so many people were left out.

Verse 84 from the chapter called Childhood

Your father dressed his top lieutenants in the national colors of Poland that day - not for any personal reasons but because the wardrobe was being provided by a right-wing Polish political party, which, having lost most of its parliamentary seats in that year's parliamentary elections, was, nevertheless, courting your father's support for its presidential candidate. Your father was saving as much money as possible for his Independent (Lower Silesian) Riflemen's Armored Brigade and its upcoming deployment to Mars, and, not having made any specific promises to the League of Polish Nuclear Families, was more than willing to allow them to outfit his men. After all, the wedding was taking place in Poland, in a Polish Church (the Sanctuary of Lichen), your mother was being married to a Pole - however disgraceful and corrupt a Pole - and therefore, there was no reason why your father, a very, very proud Pole himself, shouldn't have been wearing the old royal colors of red and white. In fact, your father took the liberty of reducing everyone's chest measurements by a small but significant margin, making sure that every single member of his party, after having trouble putting on his jacket, had appropriate posture.

Verse 13 from the chapter called Childhood

Oh child! Everything is bile. You are sheltered: you don't understand. Your grandfather is king of Mars - governor only in name - in practice: he is king. He sits atop the glass pyramid: the beautiful glass pyramid. Have you been there? I have no idea where you've been. I haven't seen you since you were a babe in arms. My arms! My blessed arms! which held you! which buried your mother with rocks!

Use of Love in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Macy and I did not see each other till the new year, establishing a regrettable pattern of intensely brief encounters followed by lengthy separation - separation very rarely experienced in terms of geographic distance. When we next saw each other it was after the start of term, and we had each fallen into our respective schedules. But because of our mutual friend Nike, we were often able to see each another - in virtually the same kind of company we had kept in Austria, with the difference of course being that Nike, although highly entertaining, was not a woman, and this changes a dynamic considerably.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 1

I suppose I shall have to explain everything from the beginning. Apparently, the senior class committee or whatever it is decided to hold a date auction as part of festivities for senior week. Now being a good senior, and having plenty of friends, and not being shy about quantifying her appeal as a woman, Barbara decided what great fun it would be to be auctioned off in front of her many admirers, and since many of her own friends would be selling themselves too, there would be very little pressure to maximize her yield, as she was confident, and rightly so, that a date with herself is worth, at the very least, as much as a date with any of her friends, to whom she feels not only love and admiration, but a slight sense of superiority, as that is a gorgeous woman's way.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

In truth, he was nervous, but for another reason: not that he'd find himself at a loss for words or action, but that he would be unable to find that woman again. There was only a small chance in hell that he would ever see her, but that's why he felt he must return and keep returning to that awful place: that fantastic middle of night, inside the Bois de Boulogne: that gorgeously engorging thruway: that clogged artery, that alleyway of the daisy queen - beautiful, flowery queen - until he found his own.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 7

But Macy was still shaking his head. "There is still true love that's being thwarted. There are still damsels in distress," he said, "but many of them are interested in each other" - he smiled - "and that's the source of their misery."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 13, Bringing Up a Delicate Subject, Paragraph 6

I asked her to bring this up casually in conversation, so that I could elaborate on the compliment, ever so innocently - but she was afraid to do it, owing to her quality of English, which was still not very good; but she agreed and after a bit of rehearsal we met with Macy on the weekend. Once we were settled down at a certain restaurant, I learned that Macy was from Boston, that he was acquainted with you, having met you our freshman year, and that he was here in Austria for the summer for no other reason but that he wanted some culture - that, and the fact that his parents had met here in Vienna in nineteen seventy-two and had fallen madly in love.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Junior shouldn't have been surprised. Middle-aged matrons masquerading as sex maniacs do not marry men who have not yet come into their inheritance. Everybody knows that. Seeking refuge among women he would never want to marry, Junior's career took a significant slide.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring true love

"The Chinese say the Emperor went to great lengths to please her. He had her entire village re-created with a functioning mosque and a bazaar. Jujube trees were imported. They bore golden fruit. The Uyghur say the concubine didn't care for it. She kept daggers up her sleeves, prepared to strike the emperor at any moment. The Chinese say she eventually fell in love. She bore him children. Whatever the case was, the Uyghur are convinced the Empress Dowager had her eunuchs strangle her to death."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a military man

The rider squinted. He put away his bow. He lifted his spear. He kicked his heels into his horse. He hurtled towards Gog. The spear leveled. Gog watched as the horseman's steed threw up a cloud of dirt behind him. They were close. They were right in front of him. Gog lobbed the straight sword into the path of the beast's eye. It saw the metal gleam. Its head jerked. The rider lost balance. Gog twanged the sickle sword against the spearhead. He grabbed a hold of the rider's arm. He pulled him off. He threw him. The rider rolled. His helmet flew. His scabbard dug into his side. He winced. He didn't have time to hurt. Gog was coming towards him. He climbed onto his feet. He drew his sword. Gog balked.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring idiot kings

Three thousand years ago, the people of the Tyras River [i.e., the Dniester] witnessed the hand of God.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man who isn't afraid of other men

His first group tournament involved a par four and a par five. The quinquagenarian wasn't Junior's favorite. The other one had two marvelous pairs of hazards on either side. Sandra was her name. The thought of her sitting on those black pantyhosed bunkers made Junior's head swim. As much as he thought he was in love, his career got in the way. He was soon attracted elsewhere by extremely large purses.

Use of Love in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I often wonder why the cruelty imposed on my brothers was necessary for my story. If not for what happened to Barack I would never have been frightened out of Moscow. I would never have had the courage to walk into the unknown. If Barack was not forced to live a life of constant pain, I would not have the life of love I enjoy with my wife. How can I thank him for that?

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that should give us hope no matter who we are

Proctor and Bob interviewed the union leadership. Nobody recognized the victims. Either they weren't members or they hadn't paid dues in a while. Bob got a list of members going back ten years. It had Elizabeth's name on it. He showed it to Proctor. Proctor crossed her name out.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a gay lover put in a weird position

You were probably thinking about it as you lay on the couch. It was after dinner. Albert was in the other room with Father. Indiana and I were on the floor. Mother was on the love seat. Grandmother was in her chair.

Olympia stopped bouncing. She squirmed. She giggled. She drooled. She started bouncing again.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may calm one's sense of distaste depending on your outlook

When Proctor got home Elizabeth was packing her bags. She was going to her sister's. She didn't want Proctor coming along. She told him to look at the news. John Gamble was all over it. So was his dead husband. Found in a love nest. Which sources claimed he may have shared with a cop.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a nude model put in a weird position

The following day the man came back. He asked me what I was talking to myself about and I told him I was mulling over current events. Politics in Moscow. He wanted to discuss it with me but I refused to talk to him unless he came inside. So he came inside. He said his name was Putin. Which I told him was similar to my own name Bongani. I asked him where his friend was and he told me that his friend had a lover. I told him I hoped he wouldn't say the same thing about me. We laughed over that. He left in good spirits.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by events that in some places were reported, though the details are fictional

The art show that defies abuse

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
